A Long Walk to Water

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park tells two stories about two eleven-year-old children from Sudan. One story occurs in the 1990′s is about a boy who was forced to leave Sudan to flee the war. The other is set in 2008 and focuses on a girl named Nya who has to walk through the desert twice a day to get water for her family.

As part of an intensive academic summer program  in Somerville, MA students read and focused on Nya’s section of the story. Rising 7th grade students Rick and Roxana and rising 6th graders Kailee and Karla used the novel, recycled materials, and their engineering skills to create a product that would help Nya on her journey to get water.
